Bridge Profiles: Timber
Covers May Mislead and They Keep
What’s Important under Wraps
April 20, 2010
Abstract
Dates for construction
and sometimes the names of builders are frequently
painted over the entrances of covered bridges.
“1860" is currently inscribed on the portal of
the Ceylon bridge in Adams county and replicated on a
mural depicting it.
When county records were consulted, the historian
learned that the structure was not built in 1860.
But, capitalizing on the presented date as a
clue, the detective uncovered other more important facts
about the crossing.
